What is Pelvic Health Physiotherapy?
Pelvic health physiotherapy is a specialized branch of physiotherapy focused on addressing issues related to the pelvic region and the core. This area includes the muscles, ligaments, nerves, and organs such as the bladder, uterus, and rectum.
Pelvic health physiotherapists are trained to assess and treat a wide range of conditions that can affect pelvic health, including:
Pelvic Pain/ Hip Pain/ Back Pain/ Coccydynia: Chronic pelvic pain can have various causes, including musculoskeletal dysfunction, nerve irritation, or underlying conditions such as endometriosis or interstitial cystitis.
Pelvic Organ Prolapse: This occurs when the pelvic organs (such as the bladder, uterus, or rectum) descend from their normal position and may bulge into the vaginal canal.
Incontinence: This includes urinary incontinence (leakage of urine) and fecal incontinence (involuntary bowel movements).
Urinary Retention: Difficulty emptying your bladder.
Pre and Postnatal Care: Pregnancy and childbirth can place significant strain on the pelvic floor muscles and may lead to issues such as pelvic girdle pain, diastasis recti (separation of abdominal muscles), painful intercourse, prolapse, urinary incontinence, etc.
Constipation: Poor stool consistency, combined with dissynergia of the pelvic floor muscles/anal sphincters can lead to stools that are painful and hard to pass.
Post abdominal or pelvic surgery: Pain, tension and scar tissue post- op can lead to pelvic floor/core dysfunction.
Peri-menopause or Menopause: Hormonal shifts as we age may lead to pelvic floor changes such as atrophy, dryness, and pain.
